The Board of the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra Association is pleased to announce that the 2020 Louise DeFeo Parillo Piano Competition will be held in Schenectady on Saturday, April 25, 2020. The mandatory concerto piece will be the 1st movement of the Mozart Concerto No.20, K. 466 D minor. An elective piece of the student’s choosing will also be judged.
This competition was created in 1995 for young pianists in the Capital District to honor the memory of Louise DeFeo Parillo. Mrs. Parillo was a locally prominent pianist who had her own radio show on WGY in the 1930s and ‘40s and was very active in area music groups, including the Etude Club. The aim of the Parillo competition is to encourage a life-long enjoyment of music in young pianists as accomplished professionals or dedicated amateurs, reflecting the spirit of Louise DeFeo Parillo herself.
The winners of the 2019 competition were Michael Lowry of Delmar (1st prize) and Samantha Baker of Clifton Park (2nd prize). Both of these young artists have been recognized around the Capital District for their achievements in piano competitions, summer festivals and master classes.
The Parillo competition is open to all piano students from the greater Capital District area who are 12 years of age or older on the date on the competition. Winners are awarded cash prizes and will be invited to perform at a joint concert with the winners of the Anthony R. Stefan Scholarship Competition. Especially promising students are considered for further performance opportunities, such as concerti with the full Orchestra or solo piano recitals, at prestigious local venues such as Union College Memorial Chapel or Proctor’s Theater.
In recent years, Parillo Piano Competition winners Ryan Reilly, Christopher Reynolds, Rachel Sohn and Kyra Lombard have been invited to perform with the Orchestra, to the great delight of our audiences. It is one of our greatest pleasures to witness our local students grow into commanding artists.
Applications must be received at the address below by February 29, 2020. Competition information, including application forms, will be sent to music departments of local school districts and many private piano teachers. For more information, write to:
