On Your Marks, Get Set, Go!

The Capital District’s first ever “Beat Beethoven: 5K Run/Walk” last year in Schenectady’s beautiful Central Park. Congratulations to all the 165 people who finished the race! Spectacular weather and great participation ensured a terrific day for all. Mike Bosaona won first place with a time of 18:37. (photo credit Jennifer Wilkerson)

Beat Beethoven is only 12 weeks away!  Fortunately that’s enough time to prepare for it, even if you’ve never run a 5K in your life.  This light-hearted morning celebrates the joy of running to the glorious strains of Beethoven’s mighty Fifth Symphony in Schenectady’s Central Park.  Check out our Beat Beethoven page for more details, including a map of the course and last year’s results.

This is one of the few area races that supports the arts, so we hope to see lots of people come forward to show their support.  Whether you are a serious runner, recreational walker or somewhere in between, we’d like to see you on Sunday morning, October 5, at 9:20 in Central Park. For those looking to start, we suggest the Couch to 5K plan to guide you to your first 5K. This 9-week training will get you running the 3.1 mile course in one piece!  For the more serious runners, we offer overall, age-group and team awards.  Last year’s teams included:

  • Too hot to Handel
  • Beethovenswig
  • Sisters in harmony
  • Homestead Funding (2 teams)
  • Team HRS (2 teams)
  • Nisky Chamber Strings
  • Double Reediculous
  • SI Group
  • Team Gilson
  • The Safety Dancers
  • Slocum DeAngelus
  • Bananas for Beethoven
  • Team Woodwind

It’s a good start, but we could use some teams out there on the course.  Issue a few challenges to your coworkers, friends or neighbors. Talk a little trash, hit the roads, and we’ll see who’s got the best time, and the best t-shirt, when October 5 rolls around!  In the meantime, happy training!
