Well, it is mid-summer once again. We hope you are all enjoying your summer activities. We have been busy as well, with a number of summer events and outings. July brought us a morning of music under the terrace at River Stone Manor along the Mohawk River at our Classical Breakfast on July 17. The strains of classical airs performed by Women of Note (Cathy Barber – Violin, Barbara Brothers – Violin, meme Pittman – Viola and Cathie-Jo Brun – Cello) complimented the morning’s breakfast beautifully. The weather cooperated- despite the threat of rain early it was a gorgeous morning.
Our Midsummer Social – a new summer event this year – featured an afternoon at SPAC for a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by the New York City Ballet. The ballet performance was fabulous, Mendelssohn’s music was spectacular, and the refreshments provided by Sandye’s Cafe on Nott Street in Schenectady not only received rave reviews by our guests, but tempted dozens of complete strangers to stop by and introduce themselves to the SSO. We’ll definitely do this again next year!
We’ll be celebrating an Evening with Renee Fleming and the Philadelphia Orchestra on Thursday August 18, with a champagne reception and dinner at the Hall of Springs before the performance. A few tickets are still available – reserve online or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are also looking ahead in earnest to Beat Beethoven! our 5K Run/Walk in Schenectady’s Central Park. This unique race features a run to the sounds of the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra’s 2007 performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, broadcast over the airwaves courtesy of WMHT, a key partner of the event. The music is 32 minutes long – and runners who cross the finish line before the end of the music will win a free ticket to our October 30th “Trick or Treat” concert.
This year is our fourth, and we are ready to expand! With the help of our many sponsors – WMHT, Berkshire Bank, Stewarts Shops, Vent Fitness, Lia Auto Group, Price Chopper, Homestead Funding Group, SI Group, CDPHP, NBT Bank, Amy Aldrich-State Farm Insurance and Schenectady VanCurler Music – we hope to see this event draw many teams or runners and walkers.
We’d love to see this event grow to be THE nonprofit/arts/Schenectady based 5K event – our answer to the Corpor
ate Challenge in Albany. But for that to happen, we need your help! Registration is open now – only $20 until September 14. Discounts for students and musicians: email us at email@example.com for more information.
Auditions are in the works. Check back for more information, and enjoy the rest of the summer!
