As a community-based symphony orchestra, the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra includes both paid and volunteer musicians. We have a long history of offering performance opportunities to talented members of our community, whether professional musicians or amateurs whose passion is for music while earning a living in another field. (See our post “Notes From the Archives” for some historical information about the SSO’s founding, including a clipping from the Schenectady Gazette from 1940.)
Musicians who wish to become a paid member must successfully pass an audition. However, qualified musicians who wish to perform on an unpaid basis may petition to join the orchestra without a formal audition, by sending a resume with current address, contact information, music training, playing experience and at least one reference (teacher or SSO member) who can be contacted for a recommendation.
This year auditions will be held on September 27, 2014, in the orchestra room at Niskayuna High School, 1626 Balltown Road, Niskayuna, NY, 12309. Afterwards, we’ll hold a brief informational meeting for anyone interested in performing with the SSO as an unpaid member.
If you are interested in performing with the SSO as a volunteer member of the orchestra, please join us at 11:30 am in the orchestra room at Niskayuna High School to find out more, or send us your information: resume including music training and playing experience, and at least one reference (preferably a teacher or SSO member) whom we can contact for a recommendation.
